Hello, my name is Victor Moschella and I am running as an independent candidate for New Providence Town Council. I am fiscally conservative and socially tolerant. My wife Betsy and I have lived here almost twenty years. Together we have raised and educated three wonderful daughters in this town. I believe that the combination of coming into New Providence from elsewhere and then raising a family here gives me a well rounded experience which will serve the community well when tough decisions need to be made.
Taxes are always the question on most residents’ minds when they think of their local government and for good reason. There are only two purposes for taxes in our town; to pay for education and government. I consider the services that are contracted by our government, part of that government for the simple fact that I did not choose them, my elected government did. I want to reduce taxes and get better local governance. Sounds like a contradiction and if you only consider the traditional methods used to reduce taxes, it is. How can I get more services and pay fewer taxes for them? Cutting the size of government puts strains on the system that usually results in poor service. Sharing in the costs of services with other governments usually results in disproportionate services or costs. Neither of these methods has worked well in the past. Ask any of our current representatives.
I support a third option. Consolidation of local governments. Imagine spreading the expense of a Mayor, a council, and all the administrative staff not among a population of 14,000 but across 50 or 60, 000? Imagine the same with the Board of Education. Imagine the negotiating power of an entity of this size when it comes to garbage collection or maintenance contracts. Imagine being able to renegotiate all contracts for public service employees and teachers. Imagine the presence that entity would have with the County seat. I believe they would listen. I am not advocating bigger government, I am advocating fewer governments.
It is my sincere wish that I can contribute in restructuring our local government so that my role will no longer be necessary. I will leave in place a community that will be fiscally sound and strong for my family, for the residents and for any of my children that wish to return as a resident of this community. It is time for a bolder approach to insuring our fiscal security.
